Dili – 04/06/2013—Last week, on 29 May 2013, CAC Commissioner Adérito de Jesus Soares made a presentation during the 4^th Session of the UNCAC Implementation Review Group (IRG) in Vienna, Austria. In his presentation, Commissioner Adérito highlighted Timor-Leste’s effort in combating corruption, including its progresses and challenges, as well as shared information about the country’s UNCAC Self-Assessment exercise last year.

Other speakers in that special session on technical assistance were Anti-Corruption Commissioner of Sierra Leon, representatives from Russia and USAID. Commissioner Adérito’s presentation received greater attention from participants of more than 160 State Parties to the Convention and UNCAC Secretariat.

Since 2011, every year, CAC represents Timor-Leste in the UNCAC IRG meetings. This annual meeting aims to bring all state parties to the convention to review the implementation process and progress made in each country.

CAC Commissioner’s recent meeting in Vienna was accompanied by Timor-Leste Ambassador to Brussel, Mr. Nelson do Santos and two other officers from CAC.

Commissioner Adérito and his team returned to Timor-Leste this last Monday  after spent a five-day IRG conference in the capital of Austria.

Dili – 04/06/2013—During the recent 4th UNCAC Implementation Review Group (IRG) meeting in Vienna, Timor-Leste also participated in a trilateral meeting of UNCAC State Parties. The trilateral meeting that was organized by the IRG Secretariat in Vienna was composed of Liberia, Angola and Timor-Leste. Timor-Leste and Liberia are the reviewer countries towards Angola’s experience in UNCAC implementation.

In that trilateral meeting that was held on 31 May 2013, the three State Parties discussed on the plan and self-assessment process in Angola as well as a possibility of on-site visit to Angola by the two reviewers when it is necessary. In the coming months, Angola will send its check-list of UNCAC Self-Assessment for Timor-Leste and Liberia to review and provide comments.

Timor-Leste’s first stage of UNCAC Self-Assessment exercise was completed last year. It focused on the Convention’s Chapter III on Criminalization and Law and Order and Chapter IV on International Cooperation. The Executive Summary of this Self-Assessment was made into public last year during the 3^rd Session of the IRG meeting along with three other State Parties’, namely, Australia, Switzerland and Georgia.

Timor-Leste’s team in the trilateral meeting was lead by CAC Commissioner Adérito de Jesus Soares and the team returned to Timor-Leste this last Monday.
