Dili – 29/06/2012–This last Wednesday, at the Secretary of State for Promotion and Equality (SEPI)’s staff retreat meeting in Jacinto Department Store meeting room, the Anti-Corruption Commissioner Adérito de Jesus Soares was presented as a keynote speaker. In his presentation, CAC Commissioner talked about relationship between corruption and development and the role of CAC in combating corruption in Timor-Leste.
The retreat brought together all SEPI staff to reflect on the Office’s work in the last five years.
On that occasion, CAC Commissioner affirmed that corruption could hinder a country from moving forward in its national development and it will affect negatively in the process of nation building. In his presentation, Commissioner Adérito called the attention of all public service, that as state apparatus, they should make effort to avoid themselves from and prevent corruption. It aimed to increase public awareness, especially public service’s knowledge on how to combat corruption.
In his talk about CAC’s role in combating corruption, CAC Commissioner stated that CAC’s work focuses on three important areas: prevention, education campaign and research and criminal investigation. In addition, he spoke about what are the types and natures of corruption and the definition of corruption itself.
Participants were very enthusiastic about the topic that CAC Commissioner presented and were keen to learn further, especially in relation to definition of corruption, types and natures of corruption and the role of CAC in combating corruption in Timor-Leste. As a result, participants proposed a similar discussion with CAC to be organized in the future to increase SEPI staff’s knowledge on combating corruption.
Present among staff in the SEPI staff retreat meeting were Secretary of State for Promotion and Equality Idelta Maria Rodrigues, Director General Tomas da Silva and Inspector Maria José Sanches.
